DEALING WITH THE

GARBAGE THROUGH

INNER HEALING

Garbage First, Then Demons

When I hear people referring to a “deliverance ministry,” I like to stop them to see what they understand by that term. I’ve found that what I and my colleagues do in delivering people from demons is different from what most people do.

Many in deliverance go after the demons right away. That approach presents at least two problems. First, it challenges the demons when they are strong. This can result in a big fight that is not good either for the deliverance team or for the person in whom the demons live. Second, the amount of what I’m calling “garbage” may be so great that the person is a sitting duck either for the banished demons to come back or for others like them to take advantage of the situation.

When the demons are dealt with first, people often assume that all or most of the work is done. Being freed from demons feels and looks so good that it is easy to neglect the need for inner healing. The demons may be gone, but the most important part of the healing hasn’t taken place, and the person is at risk of being re-infested, perhaps by more demons than before (see Luke 11:26).

So we refuse to see our task as simply deliverance. We have found that the most important aspect of a deliverance ministry is never the casting out of the demons; they are a secondary problem. The primary problem is dealing with what the demons are attached to. The aim is to get the person healed, not just delivered from the demons. But the healing isn’t complete until the deep-level hurts that disrupt a person’s relationship with God, self and others are worked through under the power of the Holy Spirit. Such healing is commonly called inner healing. Other names for inner healing are “healing of memories,” “deep-level healing” or “prayer counseling.”

A woman I’ll call Jane was brought to me by her concerned brother. She was in her mid-thirties, and her life had “dysfunctional” written all over it. She described a marriage she hated; a relationship with her children that was meaningful but marred by her angry outbursts; a childhood and earlier marriage marked by hurt, abuse, jealousy, resentment and fear. Jane and some of her children also had disturbing physical problems. She had consulted with several psychologists and had given up on them.

From what Jane and her brother shared with me, it seemed very likely that she was demonized. She feared that she might be, though she had believed the myth that Christians couldn’t be demonized. However, like many who believe that myth, and also suspect they might have demons, she found it difficult to be sure she was saved.

The question I faced with Jane, as with all others, was, “Where should I start?” After my usual prayer, in which I asked the Lord to show me where to start, we began. During the next three hours, we ended the session without having challenged the demons.
